Outstanding Contribution to Ocean Conservation - PADI

We are thrilled to highlight that Six Senses Laamu has been celebrated by PADI with the "Outstanding Contribution to Ocean Conservation" award—an honor that deeply affirms our shared mission and the impact of our collaborative efforts.

Working closely with Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI), Six Senses Laamu’s dive centre, Deep Blue Divers, embodies the best of environmental stewardship in action. Through coral restoration, marine life monitoring, guest and community education, and vibrant outreach programs, Deep Blue Divers is a cornerstone of conservation in Laamu Atoll.

This PADI award is part of broader recognition: Deep Blue Divers is one of only two dive centres in the Maldives to have earned the PADI Excellence Award in 2024, a distinction reserved for operators demonstrating exceptional commitment to sustainable operations and environmental education

‘Bright Ideas’ award & Country & Town House Future Icons award - Conde Nast Traveller

Six Senses Laamu achieved dual recognition in 2024 for its groundbreaking marine conservation efforts. We were included in Condé Nast Traveller’s prestigious 2024 ‘Bright Ideas in Travel’ list and were awarded the ‘Best Culture, Travel & Lifestyle Environmental Initiative’ at the inaugural Country & Town House Future Icons Awards.

The Future Icons Awards, presented by the UK’s esteemed Country & Town House magazine, celebrate visionary innovators who are redefining sustainability and environmental stewardship. Our Sea Hub of Environmental Learning in Laamu (SHELL) was lauded by judges as ‘an incredible conservation project,’ highlighting its success in bringing together diverse stakeholders to protect marine ecosystems.

Simultaneously, the resort’s inclusion in Condé Nast Traveller’s Bright Ideas in Travel list recognised SHELL and the Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) as transformative solutions addressing some of the most critical environmental challenges in the travel industry.

Hotel Team of the Year & Sustainability Champion - Hotelier Maldives

At the Hotelier Maldives Awards 2024, Six Senses Laamu was honored with two major awards that highlight its excellence in both hospitality and sustainability:

  • Hotel Team of the Year – This award celebrates the resort’s exceptional team spirit, collaboration, and commitment to delivering outstanding guest experiences. It reflects the seamless coordination across all departments that makes Six Senses Laamu a leader in luxury hospitality.

  • Sustainability Champion – Hotel Initiative – Awarded to the resort’s Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI), this accolade recognizes Six Senses Laamu’s long-standing dedication to marine conservation, education, and sustainable tourism practices in the Maldives.

These awards underscore the resort’s holistic approach to responsible luxury—where world-class service meets meaningful environmental impact.

Marine & Coastal category - Skål Sustainable Tourism Awards 2023

Six Senses Laamu triumphed again in the Marine & Coastal category of the Skål Sustainable Tourism Awards, marking its fourth win since 2018. The winners were announced on November 2 during the Opening Ceremony of the 82nd Skål World Congress held in Malaga, Spain. Skål International, founded in 1934, is one of the largest global networks of tourism professionals and an Affiliated Member of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Its mission is to promote reliable, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism. The Sustainable Tourism Awards, established in 2002 following the United Nations’ declaration to highlight best practices globally, aim to enhance visibility and recognize businesses for their sustainability efforts. This years focus was on the opening of the SHELL and highlighting the positive impact the SHELL can have on guest educaiton and awareness and also outreach to the local community.

 

Environmental Sustainability Award and Community engagement Award - Maldives Ministry of Tourism awards

Six Senses Laamu was recognised as leaders in sustainability and environmental protect across the Maldives when Six Senses Laamu was announced as the winner to both the Environmental Sustainability Award and the Community engagement Award. This is very special for the team to be recognised for their achevments within the Maldives and were honoured to recieve these accolades.

Sustainability Initiative of the Year - Aspire awards 2023

Six Senses Laamu was honoured to be awarded the Sustainability Initiative of the Year award at the 2023 Aspire awards, where many of the top luxury agents and businesses around the world were decorated wth a variety of awards. For the 2023 Aspire Awards, 400 UK luxury travel agents voted on submissions. Those entering the category of Sustainabiliy Initiative of the Year were asked to demonstrate clear evidence of a new sustainable innovation or a measurable improvement in sustainable practice in the 12 months prior to March 2023. Those entering were asked to highlight (via video submission) how the initiative is working to improve the planet and explain why the intiative deserved recognition.

Marine & Coastal category - Skål Sustainable Tourism Awards 2022

Six Senses Laamu has won the Marine & Coastal category of the 2022 Skål Sustainable Tourism Awards for the third time since 2018. The winners were announced on October 14 during the Opening Ceremony of the 81st Skål World Congress held in Kvarner, Croatia. Founded in 1934, Skål International is one of the world’s largest international networks of tourism professionals and an Affiliated Member of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), whose mission is to promote reliable, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism. Following the United Nations’ declaration in 2002 to highlight best practices globally, the Sustainable Tourism Awards were created to enhance visibility and recognize businesses for their efforts and initiatives within the sector globally. This year, the independent sustainability experts judged 50 entries from 23 countries.

“Protecting the Planet” Virtuoso Award

Six Senses Laamu is proud to have won the “Protecting the Planet” award during the 2022 Virtuoso Travel Week, announced during the Gala event on Thursday, August 18, 2022. Virtuoso Travel Week, held annually in Las Vegas, brings the world’s top luxury travel professionals together in series of engaging appointments and events. The week closes with the gala celebration and the award ceremony. Virtuoso recognizes and honors the network’s most acclaimed Preferred Partners and Members as leaders in the travel industry. The “Protecting the Planet” award is part of the Recognition Awards and the winners are voted by the Global and Regional Member Advisory Boards.

 

AWARDS IN 2021

Skål Sustainable Tourism Awards - Winner of Marine and Coastal Category (Six Senses Laamu)

in December 2021, the MUI team received their first ever award in their name when they were named Marine and Coastal category winners at the 2021 Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards. This is the second Skål trophy on display at Six Senses Laamu after the resort was crowned winner of the same category in 2018. The award celebrates the team’s dedication to marine conservation through their research, education and community outreach work since the last award three years ago.

 

World Travel Market Responsible Tourism Awards – Global Gold Award for Reducing Plastic Waste in the Environment

In October 2021, it was announced that Six Senses Laamu had won global recognition at the World Travel Market (WTM) Responsible Tourism Awards for Reducing Plastic Waste in the Environment. The international judging panel were said to be impressed with the extensive range of ways in which Six Senses Laamu has worked to reduce the use of plastics in the resort, to reengineer their supply chain to eliminate plastic and implement plastic-reduction and education in the local community. After taking the gold in the regional competition for the category of Reducing Plastic Waste in the Environment, Six Senses Laamu’s achievements were compared with projects across the globe, and were crowned as the winners for the global competition too.
