#LaamafaruFestival2020

Students, teachers, researchers, fishermen and more have come together to create videos for #LaamafaruFestival2020 which teach us all about Laamu’s beautiful islands and how we can help them. Even in these uncertain times, we can still come together to educate each other and celebrate our oceans, safe and protected.

Now, its your turn. You have seen the videos, you have learnt about Laamu’s natural resources and the threats they face.

What do you pledge to do to ensure our oceans stay safe and protected?

Pledges For Laamu:

To dedicate time to educating others and raising awareness of Laamu’s marine ecosystems through social media.

I will minimize the uses of single use plastic bags and clean the ocean by taking the plastics from ocean.
— Ibrahim Shiyam, L. Maamendhoo

To protect Laamu’s sea turtle population, to remove ghost net from the ocean and to rescue and rehabilitate sea turtles that have become entangled.
— Jo Goodfellow, Olive Ridley Project, Six Senses Laamu

To focus my efforts to learn how best to safeguard Laamu’s biodiversity and promote peoples needs and opportunities simultaneously.

 About

#LaamafaruFestival2020

For the past four years, Laamafaru Festival has raised awareness about ocean protection and has brought thousands of people together to pledge ‘Our Ocean – Safe and Protected’. We now see a younger generation that values, and wants to protect, marine ecosystems in Laamu. This year, the fifth annual Laamafaru festival was planned to be held in L. Mundoo but unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the event will not happen until next year. Whilst the physical event may not be possible, we believe that this is a crucial time for us to adapt as a community and find new ways of coming together, educating each other and keeping marine conservation as a priority. Thus we launched #LaamafaruFestival2020
