DR. ALEX MUSTARD BRINGS THE OCEAN INTO FOCUS

We were honoured to once again welcome Dr. Alex Mustard —world-renowned underwater photographer, marine biologist, and long-time friend of MUI. Alex’s visit to Six Senses Laamu offered a powerful reminder of how images can shift perspectives and deepen our connection to the underwater world.

Underwater Photography as a Tool for Marine Research

During his stay, Dr. Mustard took time to build upon his already impressive portfolio by photographing the rich biodiversity of Laamu’s coral reefs and marine life. But beyond capturing breathtaking images, he also shared his knowledge with the next generation of ocean stewards.

In a special workshop for the MUI team and our partners at Deep Blue Divers, Alex delivered an engaging and accessible presentation on the fundamentals of underwater photography. His insights are particularly valuable for MUI, where photography plays a vital role in conservation efforts—from manta ray and sea turtle identification to 3D mapping of coral reefs.

Learning from a professional of Alex’s calibre strengthens both our science and our storytelling. By improving how we document and share our work, we’re able to better engage guests and global audiences in the protection of Laamu’s marine ecosystem.

A Night to Remember: Sharing Ocean Stories Through the Lens

One of the highlights of Alex’s visit was an evening presentation on the Arrival Jetty, co-hosted with Steve Backshall. Together, they delivered a powerful talk to more than 100 guests and hosts—one of the largest crowds ever gathered for a marine-focused event at Six Senses Laamu.

Through his awe-inspiring imagery, Alex transported the audience beneath the waves, showcasing Laamu’s incredible marine biodiversity—from vibrant reefscapes and charismatic mantas to lesser-known creatures often overlooked by the casual observer. He also used his platform to document pressing issues such as coral bleaching, reminding us of the fragile balance within these ecosystems.

His message was clear: photography is a powerful voice for the ocean, a world that remains invisible to many but is in desperate need of protection.

Inspiring Conservation Through Creativity

Dr. Alex Mustard’s visit underscores the power of blending art and science to inspire action. By sharing not just facts, but visual stories of beauty and urgency, he helps us reconnect with the underwater world and reinforces the importance of marine conservation.

At Six Senses Laamu, we believe that every image, every story, and every act of education plays a role in building a more sustainable future for our oceans. We’re deeply grateful to Alex for his time, skills and commitment to marine conservation with the MUI team.
