A YEAR OF LEARNING: MAAMENDHOO’S SEN CLASSROOM
One year ago, Maamendhoo celebrated a milestone: the opening of the island’s very first Special Educational Needs (SEN) classroom. What began as an idea has now grown into a vibrant space filled with colour, laughter, and opportunity.
The classroom was envisioned by local teacher and conservation champion, Naila Miss, and brought to life with support from the Six Senses Laamu Sustainability Fund. Today, it stands as a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment for children with learning differences. For the first time, 15 students in Maamendhoo have access to a classroom tailored to their needs—complete with a smart TV, interactive games, and resources designed to make lessons both engaging and accessible.
Last month, our Community Engagement Coordinator, Fithura (Fithu), visited the SEN classroom with gift packages made possible through the kindness of our guests. Together, they donated 110 items ranging from puzzles and colouring books to educational games and art supplies. The children wasted no time diving in: crayons raced across pages, puzzles clicked into place, and the room filled with joy.
“It was magical to watch their faces light up. As soon as we handed over the puzzles and colouring books, the children were fully absorbed, laughing and showing each other their work. You could feel the pride they had in their own space—a classroom that belongs to them, designed for them. For me, it was a reminder that conservation and community work is never just about projects; it’s about people. This classroom is proof of what happens when love, effort, and generosity come together—a place where every child has the chance to learn, play, and shine.” — Fithu
The SEN classroom is more than just four walls; it is a symbol of inclusion and a testament to what can happen when communities, teachers, and guests come together. It represents a future where every child is given the chance to thrive.
