ORP’s Sea Turtle Ranger in Gaadhoo, one of the Maldives’s most significant sea turtle nesting beaches, took 22 eager students from Gemanafushi School, and 5 dedicated officials to a field trip to Gaadhoo.

The SHELL has a new coral nursery system capable of housing up to 10,000 corals! With this new infrastructure, we hope to significantly enhance the scale at which we can help our reef’s recovery after a series of recent coral bleaching events.

We welcomed 9 schools, with a total of 180 participants including students, teachers, and parents from across 9 islands, who engaged in this educational experience.

In October 2024, we were honored to host Professor Peter Harrison, a world-renowned coral reef expert, for his second visit to Six Senses Laamu.

Students from Mundoo School, Ihadhdhoo School, and Dhanbidhoo School eagerly participated in the start of this year’s Hellu Hallu Programme.

The resort welcomed multiple visits from schools beyond Laamu, including Grade 10 students from Fuvahmulah from Gnaviyani Atoll.

This month, we were especially thrilled to host renowned naturalist Steve Backshall and Olympic gold medalist Helen Glover.

Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of leading a fun community snorkeling with 20 enthusiastic students, teachers, and parents from Kunahandhoo Island in Laamu Atoll.

The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) has already recorded 11 green turtle nests this year from a suspected three different females, with more expected to come.

MUI made a splash by collectively contributing 6 oral presentations and 5 poster presentations for the MMSS symposium!

At Six Senses Laamu, the program’s surveys focus on reef fish and invertebrate abundance and diversity, as well as benthic composition, including coral diseases and bleaching. This data helps the team track both positive and negative changes in the reef ecosystem.

This year’s World Sea Turtle Day coincided with the Big Eid holidays celebrated in the Maldives - and both were celebrated together with the Velaa Eid Ufaa event!

We had the joy of hosting 14 enthusiastic kids in May at the SHELL . As firm believers in the importance of nurturing the next generation, we provided these young explorers with an unforgettable experience aimed at fostering environmental awareness and inspiration.

Coral bleaching endangers the fragile ecosystems of the reefs of Laamu Atoll in the Maldives. The turquoise seas and teeming marine life of the Maldives atolls are, the atolls are especially vulnerable to the effects of rising ocean temperatures and environmental pressures.

With many months of planning the team were excited to set off on the 21st April with a team of 12 individuals from MUI, as well as  Secret Paradise, Mundoo Council, Maavah Council, the EPA and Mundoo Community.
