CELEBRATING WORLD TURTLE DAY IN HITHADHOO
To celebrate World Turtle Day this year, the MUI team hosted a community event in Hithadhoo, a neighbouring island of Six Senses Laamu - and what an incredible afternoon it turned out to be. With over 150 people joining us, the space quickly filled with colour, energy, and a shared love for the ocean.
From the moment the event began, there was something for everyone. Children raced between turtle-themed games, exploring the underwater world through our virtual reality dive experience and our animal-themed face painting station—where kids were transformed into turtles, manta rays, clownfish, and all kinds of sea creatures.
Throughout the afternoon, MUI team members were on hand to engage with families, sharing fascinating facts about the turtles found in Laamu and the conservation work happening right here in the Maldives. Kids learned how researchers identify turtles by the unique scale patterns on their faces, how we monitor local nesting beaches, and why protecting these gentle reptiles is vital for the health of our reefs and marine ecosystems.
More than anything, the event was a chance for the community to come together in celebration of something we all care deeply about. Parents pitched in with games, children asked curious questions, and elders stopped by to share stories and smiles. It was a day of connection, learning, and joy—reminding us of the power of community when it comes to protecting our natural world.
We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us, and we can’t wait to host more events like this in the future. Together, we can make a difference—for sea turtles, and for the oceans we all depend on. Thank you to Hithadhoo Island for making this day a fantastic celebration.
