ERIN QUIGLEY ON POST PROCESSING
At MUI, photography is more than just beautiful imagery—it’s a vital tool for research, education, and storytelling. That’s why we were incredibly fortunate to host two inspiring tutorials with renowned underwater photographer Erin Quigley of GoAskErin.com, who shared her expert knowledge on post-production editing using Lightroom and Photoshop.
Underwater photography presents a unique set of challenges compared to shooting on land. From navigating strong currents and elusive marine life to managing how light behaves at depth, capturing a good image beneath the surface is a skilled art form. One of the biggest challenges is colour: as depth increases, the red wavelengths of light are quickly filtered out, often leaving images with a green or blue cast.
While many divers use artificial lights to bring colour back during a dive, photo editing plays an equally important role in restoring images to their true appearance. Erin’s tutorials revealed just how powerful post-processing tools can be in enhancing photos—not only for aesthetics but also for scientific accuracy.
Thanks to Erin’s guidance, our team is now better equipped to create impactful imagery that supports our conservation work. From identifying individual turtles and manta rays to showcasing Laamu’s vibrant ecosystems to guests and stakeholders, these skills will help us tell our ocean’s story more effectively—and inspire readers like you to care deeply about protecting it.
