CELEBRATING WORLD ENVIRONMENT WEEK

This June, the Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) proudly joined the celebration of World Environment Day 2025, uniting with communities across Laamu under this year’s powerful theme: “Beyond Plastic.” The week-long event—spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment in partnership with the ENDhERI Project—brought together NGOs, local champions, and national organizations to drive meaningful conversations and inspire lasting action to reduce plastic waste.

Showcasing Solutions

At the heart of the celebration was the Beyond Plastic Festival, a vibrant gathering that showcased innovative, on-the-ground efforts to create a plastic-free Maldives. MUI joined the festival with two interactive stalls: One stall highlighted how Six Senses Laamu is setting the standard for sustainable tourism—ditching single-use plastics through initiatives like refillable glass water bottles, in-villa glass amenities, and thoughtfully sourced materials throughout the guest experience.

Our second stall showcased MUI’s work within Laamu Atoll, including community-led cleanups, school outreach sessions, and sustainability fund projects. We also focused on educating visitors about the harmful impacts of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems and the species we work so hard to protect—like sea turtles, mantas, reef fish and corals. We were honored to be recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ministry for our contributions to the festival and our ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste in Laamu Atoll.

Inspiring the Next Generation: Ujaala Laamu Snorkelling Event

To round off the week’s celebrations, MUI teamed up with national and local partners for the Ujaala Laamu Snorkelling Event—a joyful, educational day that brought 33 students from 10 schools across the atoll to explore the vibrant reef just off the coast of Gan.

With the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Coast Guard, Laamu Gan Regional Hospital, Maldives Police Service, Mavericks Hotel, and Reveries Hotel, the event created a safe and exciting opportunity for students—many snorkeling for the very first time—to experience the beauty of their local marine environment.

Guided by MUI and partner NGOs, students discovered the reef’s rich coral life, shimmering reef fish, and delicate underwater ecosystems—an unforgettable experience that sparked curiosity and deepened their connection to the ocean.

A Vision Beyond Plastic

Seeing young faces light up as they explored beneath the waves reminded us why community engagement and environmental education are at the core of what we do. As we move forward from World Environment Day, we remain committed to supporting a plastic-free future—through grassroots action, innovative partnerships, and empowering the next generation of ocean stewards.
